The No. 9 earns its reputation on texture as much as flavor: the smoke is unusually thick and coats the palate, carrying dark chocolate, espresso and earth with a persistent pepper underneath. It is full bodied and full strength, and it does not thin out. Supply is genuinely limited rather than artificially scarce, so it is often behind the counter rather than on the shelf. Worth trying once at least, to understand what the fuss is about — then decide whether the Undercrown does enough of the job for a third of the money.
